Sister Mary's Story

Sister Mary Hartman, co-founder of CANTERA, is a Wisconsin native and Sister of St. Agnes. Sixty years ago, her life was changed when she moved to Nicaragua. Having witnessed war and oppression in Nicaragua, she has dedicated her life to being a social reformer and human rights activist. Her solidarity with the marginalized in Nicaragua is a tremendous act of love.

Sister Mary’s life can be characterized by her work fighting for human dignity—food for the hungry, health care for the sick, jobs for the unemployed, voice for the voiceless, education for children, respect for women, empowerment among youth, and justice for all people.

Sister Mary continues living in Nicaragua today.
