CANTERA's COVID-19 Response

As Nicaragua reported its first cases of COVID-19 in March, CANTERA is following all preventative measures by the World Heath Organization and continues to operate with a remote methodology through their rural and urban promoters in order to provide support to the people in the communities we serve.

This is an unprecedented and challenging situation, however it is part of our mission to work for those who might need us the most, especially in these difficult times.
How You Can Join Us?
The well-being of the families in the communities we serve is and always will be a priority. Please consider making a donation to ensure women, children, elders and youth get support through these arduous times.

$30.00: Prepaid telephone balance for one promoter.

At the moment, most of the work they are doing is by telephone, with this amount you can ensure constant follow-up with the people in the communities to check on their emotional and physical health.

$50.00: One prevention kit.
Many of the people we work with, live in unsanitary conditions due to the lack of water and resources. Let's change this by providing prevention kits to those families.

$100.00:  Food package for one family.

The 80% of people in Nicaragua works in the informal sector, which is one of the most affected with this crisis.  A food package can help alleviate a small family for up to two months.

CANTERA's Initiatives:
  • Widespread distribution of an information sheet about how to prevent the spread of the virus: this document includes preventative measures recommended by the World Health Organization in language that is accessible to and understood by our promoters in rural and urban communities.
  • Prevention kits: with the support of agencies and donors, kits containing bleach, alcohol, masks, herbal teas, soaps, cleaning supplies, spray containers, and other materials are distributed alongside the printed document so our 90 promoters and people we accompany can have them and inform people about this virus.
  • Follow-up visits by promoters to the people we accompany: promoters call each of them to make sure they are okay and following prevention measures.
  • Suspension of gatherings: methodological courses, gender courses, technical meetings, and other gatherings have been postponed or cancelled.
  • Closure of urban center activities: although all activities have been cancelled in our youth centers, they remain open to serve as a place of safety and refuge for young people who may be victims of violence at home.
