IMPORTANT UPDATE ON CANTERA - April, 2022
Dear Faithful Supporters of CANTERA:
As we were sending our Spring newsletter (enclosed in this envelope) to the printer on April 18th, we received the devastating news that the Nicaraguan government closed the operations of CANTERA after supporting the people and communities of Nicaragua for
over 33 years. CANTERA is one of 25 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that were shut down that day, and is among a group of over 90 NGOs which have been closed this year. Up until this announcement, CANTERA was still running many of its programs and had no
knowledge of the impending closure.
We are all very saddened by this unexpected news, and we wish we did not have to break this news so suddenly and unexpectedly. The complex political crisis in Nicaragua has presented challenges to CANTERA over the past few months, which is what we planned to convey to you
at the top of our newsletter. We enclosed the newsletter despite the fact that it was written prior to CANTERA’s closure because we want you to see the impact that CANTERA had on its communities right up through the day of this news. We also want you to know that we were
working to provide you with an update on the situation at CANTERA prior to knowledge of the unexpected closure.
At this point, we have more questions than answers, and we are sure you have many questions, too. We plan to keep you updated on the situation as best as we can. As of now, we will not be accepting more donations through Friends of Cantera. Please know that all money that
has been donated which has not yet been used by CANTERA is being held safely in the United States while we collect more information and work to formulate a plan moving forward. This is truly everything that we know right now, and we will provide you with more updates and
information in the coming months.
God bless you all and thank you for your ongoing loyalty. CANTERA has impacted thousands of people throughout Nicaragua over the years and this would not have been possible without your constant support. Please keep the people of CANTERA and all Nicaraguans close to your heart and in your prayers. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us at treasurer@friendsofcantera.org or 914-441-9887.
With love and gratitude,
Friends of Cantera Board of Directors
